How many sides? - 2-D shapes

Teaching tips:
Allow children to explore practical 2-D shapes and run their finger along the sides. If you have a smartboard, count and number each side to show them clearly. Stem sentence: ‘I counted ____ sides.’ ‘The ____ has ____ sides.’
See if children can draw a silly shape with just 1 side. They could do this with chalk on the playground.
Children will enjoy playing ‘Slime time’ where they can move the snail along the sides of 2-D shapes to reveal them. Check understanding by asking children to count the sides as the snail moves.
Pair this activity with ‘How many corners’ to look in more detail at simple properties of 2-D shapes.
