What are things made of? - 2
Drag the objects into the correct boxes. When you are ready, use the 'Mark' button to find out if you're right.
Discussion points
- What materials can you name?
- What properties does each material have which makes it suitable for each item?
- Could any of these objects be made from other material and still be useful?
- What materials can you see in your environment? What have they been used for?
- Why are some items made from material which is stretchy or waterproof?
Teaching tips:
Before completing the activity, give children time to talk in pairs or groups about which objects they can see and which column they go in.
Once complete, discuss why the material they’re made from is suitable by discussing their properties.
What would happen if a towel was made of clay or leather, or tiles were made from cotton? Can they note any items which appear in more than one category? Why is this?
Discuss how some solid objects can be squashed, stretched or bent. Why is this useful?
Activity idea: Encourage children to work scientifically by giving them a range of classroom items which they need to classify based on what they are made from or on other properties such as being stretchy, hard or transparent.
Children could be given the task of making an item of clothing suitable for a certain season.
