Sorting halves and quarters (quantities)
Drag the packets of sweets and marbles into the boxes depending on if half or a quarter of them are dark-coloured (red or brown). When you are finished, use the ‘Mark’ button to see if you are right.
Discussion points
- What is a half?
- What is a quarter?
- Do the parts need to be equal or unequal? Why?
Teaching tips:
Children could use counters and pots to share amounts into halves and quarters before completing the activity.
Use alongside ‘Sorting halves and quarters (shapes)’ and ‘Sorting halves and quarters (fruit and veg)’ to get children naming and recognising halves and quarters of an object, shape or quantity.
Test their knowledge of fractions using the ‘Halves and quarters’ flashcards and ‘Halves and quarters quiz - Age 5-7’.
