Ancient Greek pottery
Choose a template, then use the stickers and drawing tools to design your own Ancient Greek vase.
Important features for the stickers are:
- the iron button for flattening them into the shape and so you can draw on top of them
- the rainbow circle button, so you can change the stickers' colour.
Discussion points
- Pots are made of clay and then baked in a type of oven called a kiln to make them hard.
- Because pottery lasts so well, decorated pots have been a major source of information about Ancient Greek culture.
- Pottery containers were widely used for storing and transporting things.
- The pictures on Greek pots can be geometric patterns or show scenes from famous myths - stories about gods and heroes.
- Types of pot: alabastron - a small, tall, narrow-necked flask for perfume or ointment; amphora - a common, narrow-necked, two-handled storage and transportation jar for liquids and solids; hydria - a large, narrow-necked water jar with three handles (two for carrying and one for tipping); kantharos - a drinking cup with two large, loopy handles; krater - a large, wide-topped container with handles used for mixing wine with water; kylix - a wide, shallow drinking cup with handles; lekythos - a tall flask used for oil; oinochoe - a one-handled wine jug with a narrow neck; and psykter - a bulbous handleless pot used for chilling wine.
