Extract from 'The New Neighbours'
Use the paging controls at the bottom of the screen to read through the extract. (You can jump to pages using the controls at the top left.)
To enlarge the view, use the Zoom button at the top right and the tracking pad that appears. (A double-click on the tracking pad will restore the view to normal.) You can also use your mouse wheel to zoom.
On some of the pages there is a Grammar tool that highlights some of the grammatical structures in the sentences. The paging controls show the grammar-enabled pages in yellow.
Use the grammar feature to show examples of nouns, pronouns, verbs and other words to facilitate conversation on what roles these words play in sentences. For example:
Adjectives are partnered with nouns within noun phrases or stand alone as the complement to forms of 'be' (e.g. are, were) and other verbs (e.g. keep).
Verbs, regardless of their form, come partnered with a noun or pronoun (as their subject) and the two must agree in number (plural/singular) and person (e.g. 'I am'/'it was').
See how some adverbs modify the meaning of adjectives and others modify the meaning of verbs.
Discuss how proper nouns (shown with a yellow outline) are actual names and are written with a capital letter.
