Roman soldiers
Only men were allowed to be soldiers in the Roman army. They wore plate armour called 'lorica segmentata' in Latin, a metal helmet called a 'galea' and carried a rectangular shield called a 'scutum'.
Most soldiers also carried a sword called a 'gladius' and a javelin called a 'pilum'.
